The Midges Keep Their Distance is a book for children living through the pandemic by Lorna Morrow.

If you or your child have enjoyed reading this free ebook, and if you can afford it (even a pound or two), then please consider making a donation to the nominated charity – The Trussell Trust on our JustGiving page.  It would be great to be able to support them as they help people, and especially at this time.

The Trussell Trust supports more than 1,200 food banks in the UK, therefore providing much needed nutritionally healthy food to people who are in financial crisis.  They also offer support to people to help them escape their poverty and dire situation.  The figures they report are shocking, and all the more so with the increase in demand for food parcels during the pandemic by people struggling to afford the essentials for them and their children:

  • in excess of 14 million people are experiencing poverty in the United Kingdom, and of these 4.5 million are children;
  • during the first six months of the pandemic, there was an increase in need of food parcels of 47% compared to the same period of the previous year, that made it the busiest six month period they have ever had, likely reflecting low income/unemployment and sickness;
  • during the first six months of the pandemic, in excess of 1.2 million emergency food parcels were given to people in need, with over 39% of these (over 470,000) going to children - that works out at 2, 600 food parcels per day during the pandemic, just for children alone.
